New NHS policies come into force. No smoking anywhere at Great Western Hospital.
Since Tuesday 1 January 2019, the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been a no smoking Trust, this means that smoking will not be permitted anywhere onsite including the grounds and in vehicles in car parks.
Smoking is a significant public health issue in England and a leading cause of preventable ill health, premature death and disability. Smoking caused over 484,000 hospital admissions in England during 2017. For patients, stopping smoking before or during a hospital visit can also speed up recovery and reduce the risk of complications.
Julie Marshman, Chief Nurse at the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: "Clean air is important for everyone, especially in a hospital environment. Making our Trust a no smoking site is the right thing to do for all of our staff, patients and visitors.
"We understand that quitting smoking is a personal choice, but there are lots of resources available to help those who do want to give it up."
